Breakout Session Descriptions

Breakout Session 1: “Strategies for Implementing Modified Attendance and Modified Deadlines”

Modified deadlines and attendance accommodations can be some of the more tricky accommodations to effectively implement! During this presentation, we will share University of Michigan-Ann Arbor’s approach to implementing these accommodations, including the resources we have created for students and faculty, the ways we’ve responded to campus feedback, and strategies for implementing these accommodations across various course types. We will also include time for attendees to share out challenges and successes they have experienced at their own institutions.

Breakout Session 2: Linguistic Ableism

Ableism takes many forms in the setting of higher education, with linguistic ableism being one way it is upheld (Brown, 2014). Linguistic ableism is the way that members of society use language of disability to “denigrate or insult” in conversation (Brown, 2014). In this session, we will examine the harmful values that underpin ableist language and discuss the impact of linguistic ableism on disabled college students to promote a culture of inclusion and resistance.

Breakout Session 3: “Compassion Fatigue”

Attendees of this session will learn to identify and address compassion fatigue through skills they can implement when experiencing its effects. We will also examine how compassion fatigue can impact our view of students and can contribute to inequities and discrimination in our work, and how to recognize and address instance of compassion fatigue that adversely impacts our students and collaborators. Speakers will utilize a trauma-informed approach to the topic and will also provide time for discussion and questions.
